Chapter 9

I opened my bedroom door and paused in the doorway for a moment, straining to listen for any sound that might indicate someone was still in their room. When I was satisfied that they’d all gone to the dining hall for dinner, I took a few steps out into the main living area and hesitated again. I was certain Skyler was gone, but that didn’t mean Ella had left too. She tended to be as quiet as a mouse. I decided to just go knock on her door and hope for the best.

I walked over and gave a few confident knocks on her door. I wanted to be sure she would hear them if she was in there. Silence.

“Hello?” I called out.

“Hello,” a voice said from behind me. I spun around, my heart jumping into my throat, and I instantly recognized the spirit that I’d had an awkwardly close encounter with earlier.

“I’m sorry about today,” she said, pushing her dark hair back behind her ears. I was struck by how much she really did look like Ella. “I feel just awful that I made you crash. Sometimes I still get confused about how to get from one place to the next.”

“That’s okay.” I tried to sound calm, even though I could still feel my heart racing. “What’s your name?”

“You don’t know?” she asked, cocking her head to the side like she didn’t quite believe me.

“No, I’m sorry. Should I?”

“I just thought someone might’ve told you about me already, that’s all.” She started to cross the room, running her hand along the back of the couch. “This used to be my room, you know.”

“So you are Savannah Scott then?”

A smile spread across her face. “So you have heard.”

“Yes, I have. I’m so sorry about what happened to you. Well, I guess I don’t really know what happened exactly.” I waited to gauge her reaction. The last thing I wanted to do was bring up a painful experience. The girl had been through enough. But when she just gave me a blank stare, I decided to push a little. “Do you?”

She stopped walking and looked up at me like she was considering something. “How do I know I can trust you?”

“Well, I suppose you don’t really. I’m basically a stranger. There’s a lot of whispering about what happened to you though. Whether it was an accident or something… else. But I’m also the only person here who doesn’t have anything to lose by uncovering the truth about what happened to you. Don’t you want everyone to know the truth?”

Just tell me already! I wanted to scream. Instead, I exhaled a long breath and continued. “Do you even know what happened? I know sometimes it takes a while for spirits to get all of their memories back if they’ve experienced a traumatic death.”

She narrowed her eyes. “No, I remember.”

A sudden knock at the door interrupted us and she whipped her head around.

“It’s okay. Don’t leave, okay?” I pleaded.

She turned back to look at me, wide-eyed, and shook her head before disappearing.
